How to Remove a White BG in PS

HOW TO REMOVE A GHASTLY WHITE BACKGROUND FROM PICTURES, WHETHER DRAWN DIGITALLY OR TRADITIONALLY.

*****EDIT: The second picture show up as being a little off-white... It turned to that when I saved it as a PNG image, but the original is completely white.
MAKE SURE YOUR BACKGROUND IS AS PURE WHITE AS YOU CAN GET IT, OR THIS MAY NOT WORK AS INTENDED.

I did not discover this on my own, I had a push in the right direction and played with it until I got the desired results.
